ORGANISING PRODUCERS
Producers can participate in markets and realize better returns if they build their own institutions effectively. ALC India believes producer groups understand their needs, can dream big and join together if the benefits are worthwhile. To support this process, ALC India offers a gamut of services – from mobilization of the members to the systems of governance.
Mobilisation
A critical step in the process of building groups or collectives, ALC India can formulate strategies for mobilization based on an understanding of the right audiences, ground realities and business plans.
ALC India offers strategies and execution support for the full process of mobilization – creating awareness, shared vision, engaging potential members and securing commitments as share capital.
Institutional design
People’s institutions or institutions of the economically marginalized have to be designed to embody the values of the collective institution and align the institution’s efforts to the member interests.
ALC India approaches people’s collectives (in their various forms – SHGs, Joint Liability Groups, Cooperatives, Producer Companies etc.) with the end view that they must foster reliance and evolution. Accordingly, ALC India designs institutions with robust governance, operational systems and mechanisms that optimize member involvement and participation.
Institutional policy
An institution is built by giving life to policies that incentivize and encourage courses of action.
ALC India designs policies that reflect the institution’s articulated values and encourage action in line with its aims. These policies cover key areas and spell out standard procedures, responsibilities and the institution’s way of doing things – all designed with the purpose of helping the institution perform and grow for its members’ interest.
Institutional effectiveness
Institutions are easily incorporated. Assessing their effectives is far more complex. In some ways, it is easy and in other ways, difficult.
ALC India can support institutions with such assessments, offering a measurement of the institution’s performance against mission through a systematic, explicit, and documented process.
Governance
In democratic, member-controlled institutions, governance takes on characteristics and nuances that make it more challenging than ever.
